TYPE 3 GAS APPLIANCES – This refers to gas appliances generally above 250 MJ/hr input rating and would mainly apply to commercial and industrial appliances. This is for electronically and/or mechanically controlled gas appliances and equipment, and to one-off designs. Typical examples of type 3 appliances are commercial bakery ovens, large boilers and some appliances which are also used domestically, instantaneous water heaters, spa pool heaters, gun type burners and so on. Many gas appliances have a combination of type 1, 2 and 3 controls. For example a cooker may have 230 v ignition and a flame rectification safety device fitted to the cook top while having a thermo-electric safety device fitted to the oven. There are many overlaps in the lighting, the flame failure controls and the method of flame control in all three categories. The basic knowledge of control transects all appliances and a thorough knowledge of the gas ignition, controls and safety devices is required before any work on gas appliances is performed. Euro Plumbing strongly recommend that only a qualified and experienced gas fitter preform such work.
Some common gas appliances are, Salamanders, commercial stoves, commercial wok burners, gas fryers and dishwashers. |

Euro Plumbing’s 14 step Commercial Appliance Service and repair checklist:
- Fans and usually every surface in the appliance get dust on them. Care should be taken to ensure as much of the dust is removed as possible.
- Burners tend to corrode due to condensation on the burner and should be inspected for rusting as this block ports and/or corrode holes in the burner. Care should be taken to ensure that corrosion around the transfer port from the sensing electrode is clean, as the flame signal back to the control relies on good electrical contact with both the flame the flame probe and the burner earth. A common fault with the flame probe is a build-up on the probe which should always be cleaned with fine emery paper. Note the some manufacturers use two flame probes so both of these need to be checked.
- Make a visual check of all components of the appliance, checking control wiring, loose fittings and corroded parts of the appliance which may adversely affect the performance of the appliance.
- Visually check the flue to ensure it is not blocked, for example, with birds’ nests. Also check that there is no spillage which may adversely affect the performance of the appliance.
- With an infrared control, remove the cell and the cover while the burner is operating, and see if the appliance shuts down into lockout within a couple seconds.
- Clean the flame probe with fine emery, (not a wire brush a fine unseen wire may short the probe to earth)
- The flame should establish quickly – if the spark continues for several seconds it usually indicates that the flame is only just managing to get to the hold on position before lockout. The cause should be checked to prevent a call-back in the near future (saving you money and hassle). If necessary, check the probe current with a micro amp meter in series with the probe to control. Use – to the probe and + to the lead from the control. The reading should be in excess of 7 micro amps and a steady reading without undue fluctuation.
- Check that the pilot lights are up the main flame cleanly, without delay. It is most important that the pilot lights up the main flame quickly and cleanly.
- Check the overheat switch if possible
- Check gas pressure to ensure the comply with the pressure on the rating plate of the appliance.
- Check the thermostats and safety devices operate as they should. Ensure that the gas pressure and the fan pressure switches are set to the correct specification.
- Turn the burner off and on several times to ensure that the pre-purge and post-purge cycle, if fitted, operates as it should.
- Check the fan for dust and required clean with a small brush of compressed air.
- Provide a full checklist with results of service on completion, including recommended next service.
