Why You Should Never Hire A Cowboy

An interesting article was recently published on the Herald entitled “Top reasons never to hire a cowboy”. This is a very interesting article which directly talks about the plumbing industry and is something everyone should read.

This article covers the topic of why you should always hire a registered plumber and covers many key areas on the subject. Firstly, why would anyone hire someone who is not a plumber? As stated in the article, “Plumbers, drainlayers and gasfitters can be hard to find when you need them – and there’s another guy offering the job done at a much cheaper rate.” So why is this such a bad thing?

First and foremost is that it is illegal. Quoting from the article, “by law, homeowners and landlords must hire authorised plumbers, gasfitters and drainlayers for a wide range of restricted tasks. That’s because, as Sawyers says, what often seem simple tasks are actually complicated when it comes to tapping into plumbing and gasfitting systems.” Plumbing, gas fitting and drainlaying is a very intricate field which requires extensive knowledge. Everyone who works  as a plumber, gas fitter or drainlayer has to go through years of training to get registered before they are allowed to do the work. Not just anyone can do a bit of plumbing here and there.

This article points to what can happen if an unregistered plumber does plumbing work, such as hefty fines, invalidating insurance and the potential for things to go very wrong when things aren’t done right, which can result in very expensive repairs. This is all something every home owner should know before they need work done.
