Gas Central Heating Prices and Installation

June 4, 2018

Kiwis have traditionally followed the practice of single room heating, but it actually isn’t as efficient or as comfortable as central heating. New Zealand has a very wet climate and experiences a huge drop in temperature overnight, so it’s important to have a system that maintains the heat inside the home.

A gas central heating system is one of the best options available. If you already use gas for water heating, installing a gas central heater will be easier as well as cheaper because there is an existing system. To figure out whether gas central heating stacks up for you, you’ve got to do some maths.

Below are the potential costs of gas central heating including installation, repairs, servicing and testing. The actual costs will depend on your home and heating needs.

Installation for Radiator Central Heating: $14,999 (GST incl.)

Euro Plumbing offers radiator central heating systems that are suitable for LPG and natural gas fuel. Radiant heaters are the most efficient system for heating homes without the worrying energy costs.

The typical installation cost, with design and heat output based on a 3-bedroom home, includes the following:

  • 1 x Bosch/Baxi 18KW boiler
  • 7 x 1KW radiators, sized to suit
  • All labour and materials involved
  • Plumbing and gasfitting work
  • Commissioning and certification

To cater to individual needs, we offer individually designed heating system for every home. Our radiator central heating systems can also be retrofitted into existing homes.

Running costs

According to Consumer NZ’s 2017 Winter Heating Guide, natural gas is the cheapest fuel for central heating, while LPG is a bit more expensive. Piped natural gas has an average fixed daily charge of $1.45, though it can range from 8c to $1.89. On the other hand, the annual rental fee for two 45kg LPG tanks is $118.

Central heating service and maintenance: $402.50 (GST incl.)

Regular servicing and maintenance keeps your equipment operating at optimal condition, which prolongs the lifespan of your equipment. You could save up to $200 in energy costs per year by ensuring your gas central heating system is running at best condition.

At Euro Plumbing, our maintenance service includes:

  • System flushing/cleaning
  • Gas appliance testing and service
  • Testing of electrical components and controls
  • Testing of actuators and solenoids
  • System balancing and commissioning
  • Flue gas analysis
  • Combustion level analysis
  • Full report of service with related recommendations

Gas Appliance repair: $172.50 (first hour minimum charge)

You’ll probably run into some repairs over the lifespan of your gas appliance. When required, make sure to call in a licensed gasfitter who will investigate and remedy the fault straight away.

Gas appliance certification: $279

Any equipment that runs on gas must be tested, rated and certified to ensure it is safe to operate and the heat input is the correct amount for which the appliance is designed.

A gas certificate is issued once your appliance passes the following procedures:

  • Visual and soundness test
  • Co/ Co2 test
  • Pressure and gas rating test
  • Gas system check

Final word

It may look expensive if you look at all the costs at once, but having a central heating system installed makes financial sense in the long run. It’s a cost-efficient way of keeping your home comfortable all year-round.
