If you are facing a plumbing emergency, what is the first thing you should do? First of all, DON’T PANIC! A lot of people go into a frenzy and can’t think clearly. Keep a cool head and follow these steps:

Turn off the water supply

Find the quickest water supply to the leak and turn of the water. If you are dealing with a toilet, this could be the valve at the base or behind the commode. If the issue is larger, it may be a good idea to turn of the mains water supply. Most valves turn off by turning clockwise

Check your hot water cylinder or water heater

If you have a big issue, it is a good idea to turn off the water heater. This is prevent the unit from getting damaged. If you leave the heater on, the heat inside could well up, and this raises the risk or it bursting or overheating. For gas units, always turn the gas off first.

Deal to small leaks

If you can find a small leak and you believe you can stop it, do so. It may help to put towels around leaking pipes, or buckets under the drip to prevent damage to your floors. Let your plumber known about these leaks when they arrive. This will not only save time but ensure the issue is dealt with in the safest order.

Remove leftover water

After the water is turned off, there will still be water in your pipes that will continue to leak in the problem area. This water can be moved away by opening any taps on the outside of your home. Make sure the garden hose is clear too by giving it a spray. If you experience a blockage, try using a plunger but do not use any chemicals.

Call the plumber

This really should have been done by now, but if you are like many people and forgot to call during all this, now is the time to pick up the phone and dial. Calling before you try to deal with the problem is a good idea because the person on the phone may be able to advise you on what to do best.
